The Law of Success: A review of Lesson One-The Master Mind

Everything operates according to laws.

There are laws of physics, Spiritual laws such as the law of Faith, laws of countries, and even universal laws.

One of the more universal laws is The Law of Success. Many have written and taught about it extensively such as Napoleon Hill, Raymond Holliwell, and Earl Nightingale.

“Success is the progressive realization of a worthy ideal.” Earl Nightingale. Share on X

According to Napoleon Hill, it’s not just any idea or ideal. It’s one about which you’re passionate. There’s a strong emotional attachment, and it’s definite.

Not only that, it’s a “worthy” ideal. Worthy means it’s truly good for you and others. You’re worthy of the ideal, and it’s worthy of you.

When you have that level of commitment to such an ideal you’re exchanging your entire life for that ideal. It had better be worth it and worthy of such a trade.

All new ideas only become planted in the human mind after a great deal of repetition. That process accounts for the principle that Mr. Hill has labeled as, “The Master Mind.”

The Master Mind

“A “Master Mind” may be developed by a friendly alliance, in a spirit of a harmony of purpose, between two or more minds.” Napoleon Hill, The Law of Success in Sixteen Lessons, (Wilder Publications, Inc, First Edition, ©2011), page 53.

Whenever two or more minds come together, regardless if they’re in harmony or not, they create a group mind that affects all of the members involved, whether they like it or not. It’s inevitable. When two or more minds come together, they can’t help but create a third, “Master Mind.”

Some groups come together and form a negative gestalt which is the opposite of a “Master Mind.” The sad truth is that many people just are unable to blend into a harmonious oneness with others. Their very presence in such a coalition contaminates and weakens the whole.

There are many phenomena in science that are examples of how the combination of parts and principles create the third whole. One such example is the blending of atoms into molecules and all working together with a specific purpose. Hardly anywhere is it better illustrated than in the area of chemistry.

Mr. Hill points out that the ability to create a harmonious and effective Master Mind was the key to the tremendous success of Andrew Carnegie. It’s the key to anyone having success, not just in business, but in marriage, sports, and organizations such as churches or political parties.

In his book, “Think and Grow Rich,” Mr. Hill explains in detail how Henry Ford also had a Master Mind group of his own. He attributed his enormous success to that group.

Some marriages, churches, sports, and other group endeavors fail because one or more of the members are unable to blend harmoniously within the group mind.

Mr. Hill cautions us to be careful about blaming others in the group for this failing.

“Do not be too ready to charge the other party to your alliance with all the responsibility of lack of harmony. Remember, the trouble may be with your own brain!” Napoleon Hill, The Law of Success in Sixteen Lessons, (Wilder Publications, Inc, First Edition, ©2011), page 55.

Just because you can’t harmonize with one group doesn’t mean you won’t be able to find another that you can work with just fine. Eh? Sometimes it’s not that there’s a toxic individual, it’s that the particular combination doesn’t jive.

The entire law of success and the 16 Lessons intricately tie into the whole Master Mind principle. Mr. Hill stresses that if you don’t grasp the Master Mind concept, then the other principles and aspects of the Law of Success will be virtually useless to you.

Even two people can make up a Master Mind. You’ve probably heard of Mastermind groups. They’re very popular in today’s world, over 110 years after Andrew Carnegie because they’re incredibly powerful.

They’re what the military calls a “force multiplier.”

According to the Department of Defense, a Force Multiplier is, “a capability that, when added to and employed by a combat force, significantly increases the combat potential of that force and thus enhances the probability of successful mission accomplishment.” (JP 3-05.1) US DoD.

Jesus said, “For where two or three are gathered together in my name, there am I in the midst of them.” Matthew 18:20.

Two or three (or more) gathered together with the same mind, aimed in the same direction at the same time. That’s formidable!

If that group isn’t kicking butt and taking names, the group isn’t working as a single mind on the same thing at the same time. They’re also probably not clear about what the mission is in the first place.

Two Main Types Of Mastermind Groups

In today’s world there are two basic types of mastermind groups.

The first type has a group leader who coaches, facilitates, and manages the mastermind process for the others in the group. This leader is not an actual member of the group, but is never the less a part of the mastermind process.

The leader can be a coach, mentor, teacher, consultant. It’s the type of mastermind that’s perfect for members who are new to the mastermind process and need guidance and an overseer to make sure the process remains effective and free from a strong personality taking over.

This type works well for groups that have members working on a diverse set of focus, goals, and backgrounds.

The second type is member managed. It’s a style where all the members share in the group mind equally. There is no primary leader.

In some variations they may rotate leadership. In other variations they may have no specific leader at all.

This type is for a group of members who are quite experienced at the mastermind process and can take complete responsibility for their own thoughts, feelings, and behavior and are not prone to getting their feelings hurt. It’s also best for groups that are homogenous; meaning they’re all working on the same thing the same time with the same purpose.

The Best Place To Start

The simplest way to begin your own Mastermind is to work with a coach. An experienced coach is a trained listener and experienced with proactively blending with one or more souls to accomplish a specific task.

They can do that in such a way as to make sure their persona doesn’t interfere in any way with what you are designed and destined to create.
